* Roll to see if I can disable the device? *
"It seems the door is rigged. However....this liquid may protect us from the explosion, but may also compremise the hull."
*Turns to Exemplar and the red shirts*
"Thoughtsss?"

"I think that the crewmen should get back, and that you should go with them if you can't diffuse it. I might be able to open it, but I don't want you getting hurt if that happens."

*kaboom!*
*the age of the device, and the medium in which you are working on it in, seem to lessen the damage. The actual explosion is contained within a rubbery sphere. The shrapnel, white hot and very rapid, accrue a rubbery coat and decelerate rapidly, punching you very hard and breaching your space suit, but otherwise doing no significant damage. The bomb also perforates the door in a very planned way, sending shrapnel through the door and into whatever would be on the other side. Fortunately, this also wrecks the mechanism keeping it closed, and the door slides open allowing access to the inside of the ship. Ignak is lucky, and aquatic, so his space suit fills with the medium which he is capable of breathing. Some of the protein products within the medium are nutritious, and he would be capable of consuming them. You are now in close enough contact with the algae to use your plant empathy (I know they aren't plants but they're close enough, and I don't recall seeing a psi power called "microbe empathy"). Of course, the algae are happy little protective critters, bathing you with their glorius secretions. Of note: a combination of the shockwave and the rubberized shrapnel is what breached your suit, if it's just a vac-suit. If it's space armor, it's fine. Ignak is a bit stunned, as is everyone in the airlock, but is otherwise ok.*
*Inside the ship: several bodies in vac suits, completely unlike those in the airlock, are floating in the medium along the hallway. The halls curve back and forth, creating bottlenecks and blind sides through their entire length. The ship is built around a central passenger chamber, forward of which is the bridge, aft of which is engineering. A few areas have been walled off by containment doors, preventing access below. These areas correspond to the ice ruptures seen from outside the ship. The vessel has about a hundred people in it, all in vac suits, and all dead.*

*Shaking his head to clear it, Ignac feels the contact of the active little microbes. Concentrating on them, he attempts to establish some contact via Plant Empathy *

*A bit panicky, Exemplar moves around the area, checking the crew for injuries*
"Is everyone Alright?!"
*After ensuring everyone's safety, Exemplar begins exploring the area, looking at the bodies, tools, computers, and anything else shiny or eyecatching.*

*everyone is pissed and ok.*
*an engineering station displaying the reactor is still functional on the bridge, all other consoles have been deactivated to conserve energy*
*a group of six of the crew are huddled together in what appears to be a workshop. They seem to have been working on a device of some kind.*
*Ignak: The microbes, as microbes tend to do, have little to express. They feel protective and sad, and are gleeful at their new contact with living people. Finally they have someone to protect again. and they taste both sweet and sour. Congratulations, you have established contact with a new species!*
*A cursory examination of the passengers indicates that several of them deactivated their own life support before dying, but still have traces of atmosphere left in their tanks.*

"Are we sure they are dead? Not in some sort of stasis? It's really strange that they died with life support remaining..."

(omar will be delayed in posting as he has yet to make his character, but as the medical officer, in fact with psychic healing powers, he would have something to contribute here. I'll post in his absence)
*the medical officer, (who would have been standing by to come aboard as needed) with his psionic powers and hard earned skills, makes the determination that the aliens are in fact dead. He reports one point of interest, however. When examining the two figures in black armor, from the airlock, he hears a 'psionic echo'. He would like to take sample corpses of the aliens back to the ship to perform investigative autopsies, to learn more about their anatomy and physiology, but he says that he can, at this time, make a reasonable prediction that his investigations will reveal the two four limbed figures from the airlock to be naturally psionic. He also states that they are insects, and insects creep him out.*

(Also as a psion who is now thinking about cutting back some of his powers such as healing - Ignac may identify these things too?)
*Ignac works to restor power to the vessel before examining the device the crew was working on*

*with some fiddling, you manage to restore partial power. The consoles in the bridge come back on. Most of them appear to be more or less what is expected from bridge equipment, displaying sensors, comms, gunnery, and the captains interface, which has an open file being displayed in an alien language. The device, after some examination, appears to be an attempt at a countercurrent oxygen extractor. It seems to be intended to pull atmosphere from the liquid that fills the ship.*

*Ignac determines whether he can setup a similar environment in the lab back on his ship or if he must remain here, looking to finish the work. Tapping his comm badge, Ignac calls to the ship *
"Captain, this is Ignac. I have restored partial power to the ship. It appears the crew wasss working on a device to extract oxygen from a strange, microbial liquid compound. The microbes are harmless and we have secured the ship. The liquid compound has some interesting properties. Permission to take samplesss aboard?"

Granted. Be sure to take appropriate HazMat precautions until we've verified that they do not pose a threat.

"Little late for the hazmat captain... Both my suit and Ignac's were busted when we opened the door onto the ship."
