After Game Etiquette...

Post by rydi »

As I pick up the junk and clean off the mat from Saturday, it occurs to me that I need to post this. This really goes for all games, but especially for DnD, thus my posting it here.

When utilizing someone else's toys, put them back where you found them, clean and in good order. People were very good about this for a while, but now it's pretty hit and miss. I don't like having to put stuff away when I also pay for and store said stuff, and I'm sure the same applies to Mike, Jason, or anyone else hosting games. Don't make the host feel like an asshole* by making them ask, just do it. And finally, just b/c you helped pick up once does not remove the responsibility to see stuff put away in the future. A list of common clean-up needs follows:
  • Miniatures up and reasonably organized
Trash thrown away (food, cups, napkins, shredded debris from things destroyed for entertainment value)
Wet erase mats cleaned, rolled smoothly (no creases please), and put away
Any accessories put in their proper locations
Books in a pile, or on the bookshelf
Tables and guest furniture put away
Any outside messes cleaned up (cigarettes, cups left outside, or lawn furniture moved out of alignment [when applicable])
Fix miscellaneous other stuff that the group got out, brought in, or messed up
Don't worry about the little stuff, fluffed pillows, blankets, and the like; those are the host's responsibility.

*Sorry to sound like an asshole, but I truly hate having to pick up shit and put it away, for multiple reasons. If you are consistently putting things away and doing more than your fair share, then you have my apologies for the rudeness; just harangue those that aren't doing their part into pitching in.

Thank you for your consideration :flower:

I am sorry if I left my McDonald's out, or any other mess I left. I honestly do not remember if I cleaned up. That being said I think part of the issue is ending at 6:00 in the morning, and by that time I am in a rush to get home forgetting that I should clean up.

I am not sure if this is a good place to post this, but I am going try to leave between 3:00-3:30am.

I already mentioned this to Gid but since I don't have a week off anymore I need to leave by 1-1:30. I however can get there earlier.

I'd actually like to end at 2am. I've been wanting to forever, and we actually were doing good for a while, we were ending between 2:30 and 3:30. I want to go back to that, and leave this 4am+ gaming far, far behind. Shit, even if people stay over and chat until dawn, I want the game done by 2ish.

I don't mind getting started earlier, though we've actually been doing pretty well on that too the last 2 weeks. If people show around 4-4:30, get food at 5, and start play at 6ish, that leaves quite a long time to play. One food break seems to be the norm, but that's usually only 30 minutes.

So you're saying I should come up Friday and sleep on your couch a night most weekends? That's the major common factor that I spot.

Sad, but true.

Though one week you were here bright and early at like 3:45... It was cold in hell that day.

And, if I recall, no one else showed up until nearly 5... My efforts are in vain. Negative reinforcement is why I'm late. Watch how I shift the blame! It isn't MY fault. It's EVERYONE ELSE'S fault. Yes. Yes, exactly.

You don't have Exalted on Fridays anymore Steven, so you should be able to get to sleep at a reasonable hour, right???

Is that a rhetorical question?

Hmm... Negative punishment is more similar to what you are talking about; a desired stimulus is taken away. Or perhaps extinction training, wherein the desired/expected outcome is not paired with the behavior, leading to reduction of the target behavior (show up > no one there > stop showing up). Perhaps even classical conditioning, wherein the action is paired with the emotion of irritation, loneliness, and wasted effort, and thus the activity takes on negative connotations, leading to cessation of the target behavior.

Negative reinforcement is the process by which an undesirable/aversive stimulus is removed... It is a reward. When you wake up, you can turn off the horrid alarm clock. When you do your chores correctly, we stop lashing you with a rubber hose. And so on.

I stand (or actually sit) corrected.
